The Battle of the Somme

The most gigantic bombardment of the war to that point took place in 1916. British would fire more than 1.5 million shells at German positions over a week. The guns could apparently be heard on Hampstead Heath in London, around 150 miles away. Many of those shells as well here failed to detonate and today you still see piles of unexploded ammunition discovered by farmers left by the roadside.
