I think art is a way of trying to preserve what I've heard Jane Hirschfield, wonderful poet and essayist call the mineral knowledges. How do we save these essential things? Maybe we write a poem and we go back to the poem again and again. And then we forget. Often I get closer to that door because I'm tending my garden. I'm doing really ordinary things and allowing myself to just be present with those ordinary things. Then somehow that opens that sensitivity to appreciating art more deeply or even maybe a poem will occur to me while she's doing chores.
