Basil II and the Bulgarians
Basil II was the Byzantine leader at the time. He launched an attack in the center of Bulgaria to try and draw Samuel's attention away from the defense of what is the southern Greece area. This was in 986, and he'd besieged the city of Sardica for 20 days. The Bulgarians held fast in Sardica and frequently would come out of the city during the siege and capture and kill their Byzantine attackers.
