The History of Pale Malt
It depended on where they were. The brown malt that the London brewers used was mostly straw derived. And also you find with some of the types of brown malt they'd use wood right at the end. This is even when you've gone over to to using cochas of fuel, just to get a really intense heat and to get some sort of burnt flow flavor into it. But no, Martin Cornell recently did an interesting piece about how pale malt was around long before people started molting with coch.
