The Double Movement of John the Baptist
Jesus breaks with John the Baptist, not in anger or hatred, but because he wants to focus on what can be done here and now. But when Paul comes along in the first generation after Jesus has died, Paul is thinking of a new revelation about Jesus' return from heaven. So that suggests to me that the historical Jesus back at the bottom there was doing this. Yes, talking about the reign of God, but talking about it in this natural way of its gradually emergence.
