The Power of Data to Improve Public Health
Dr. Jon Snow is credited with helping end a cholera epidemic which struck the Soho neighborhood of London in 1854. He deduced that the most likely source of the outbreak was one water well. And he made a pitch to shut down the water well and that really helped end the outbreak at the time. But this is really one of the first examples of using data to in a very direct way to improve public health.
