Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson's Disease

The concept of deep brain stimulation for movement disorders like Parkinson's disease. In the 1970s some tainted synthetic heroin caused a Parkinson-like syndrome and unfortunate patients who took this tainted drug called MPTP. This led to an animal model of Parkinson's disease that allowed neuroscientists and neurosurgeons to really study the circuits with great precision. They were able to determine that putting an electro in a specific part of the brain could dramatically ameliorate or improve tremors and other motor symptoms of Parkinson's Disease. Another device that's in use commonly for patients with epilepsy.
