I think that one of the surprises of this entire conflict was the inability of Russia's nuclear deterrent to keep the United States from intervening in a proxy conflict, an proxy war. I have seen growing levels of nuclear-saber rattling from people like former premier president Medvedev and some from president Putin himself. So basically Ukraine is a very serious military power led by a virulently anti-Russian regime. This conflict did not start much more so now than it started eight years back or nine years back.
