I Think He's Raising the Stakes of the Intellectual Life
I think he's making the case that the intellectual life is a vocation. It has a legitimacy in and of itself, just in that way that being a father or being a priest taking on a profession is. But it does require an immense amount of commitment. And certainly there are facts about like the academic life, the structures of modern academia which probably enable commitment to put us that time aside to do real intellectual work.
