The idea that it's just a speculative asset would be disappointing to the true believers in it. Every currency is a social construction, even the so called fiat currency. There could be a small sub set of people for whom it is an ideology. And then there could be another set of people who are simply making a bet on human nature. They understand how the market moves these days and what word of mouth tends operate.
