Gordon Brown went into Dartmoor National Park in Devon for 101 days. He was inspired by a bit of folklore that said if you were bitten by a wolf and didn't leave the house, it would diffuse its power. The story develops from there but he had no clear ambition or even understanding that it was going to become a book as he was writing it.
