The Philosophy of Socrates Predates Nietzsche
Nietzsche calls Socrates the mystagog of science. There's an undertone among the way Nietzsche treats Socrates that you have to replace a dying or dead religion with a new religion, he says. Why is this a problem? It becomes a problem because this entire project of elevating mankind has proceeded deeper and deeper into the abstract world. When offered the chance to escape from his death sentence, Socrates chooses to remain; it says he owes sacrifice to ask Lepius the god of medicine.
