Machine Intelligence, Sentience and Consciousness

I think we have to separate intelligence from consciousness and sentience. Intelligence is actually easier in some ways to define, because we can at least model capability and reactivity to stimuli. But are they self aware enough to develop the desire for rights without us specifically coting that into them? I don't know if i personally have a strong answer yet. It's a reflection of ethics in terms of how we treat each other. If we can respect ourselve s and other human beings, why shouldn't we also respect these intelligent machines that we're building?
