Any city that surrendered was spared and its population treated humanely. But the ones who resisted condemned themselves to extermination. Refugees from these persian cities told terrifying stories. Any one who raised a weapon to the mongol horseman was killed outright. The shah soldiers were either killed immediately or kept as human shields during later sieges.
