In the early going, there is a lot of reason to be optimistic. Jesus recruits an inner circle of followers and he starts doing miraculous stuff,. People are very compelled by it. It's looking like this is probably going to be the Messiah. But given how busted up the psyche and the cultural memory of the Jewish people - they won't know for sure until much later.
