The Isolation of North Brother Island
The culture of north brother island was dictated by women. Those with singular afflictions, ranging from measles to leprosy, were isolated in small tents or huts away from even the regular hospital population. While doctors, all men, were allowed to leave the island, the nurses, all women, lived here year round.
