Melvin: How do we make sense of a group of african american intellectuals and activists who clearly belonged to a class that were xcludeit from society. And yet they committed themselves to trying to transform the American polity. So i try to tell a bit of that kind of historical philosophical story, and i try to lay out some of the sort of foundational elements of both their understanding of democracy and the method of appeal.
