Sentience and Consciousness
In terms of sentience and consciousness, I think most people will agree animals are sentient and conscious. After all, they may experience much more pain than we do. And that would be a terrible thing if we created such beings. There's a lot that we don't understand about our own sentality. We don't have a good comprehensive theory that seems to match what we describe as what it is like to be us. It's not what philosophers would call an epiphenomenon. We're just coincidental.
