The concept of soldiers for hire is anything but new, and it's happened in the us. The verangian guard were a band of viking mercenaries paid to serve as the perso bodyguards of the byzantine emperor. Many german s regularly rented out the services of their troops to fight in wars in which they had no personal involvement. Later in world war one, american former military men went to war as private contractors. Was just make sense if you were some ruler and you didn't have the man power to defend your throne or try to add to your territory.
