The Cables of the Ford Zone
The elevator control cables were made of stainless steel, and they were made up of seven strands of 19 wires. Six outside strands spiralled around a central strand with a pitch of about 23 millimeters. In flight, the loads on the cable are at their greatest when it's necessary to counter the pitch moment induced by the retraction of the flaps. The wear was due to its chafing on the polyamide bush located in the cable guide. It had affected all the strands except the central strand, which had led to the failure.
