R g Collingwood was a philosopher of history and archaeologist who taught at oxford between the wars. And i still think its the most profound statement on what it is that historians are trying to do that i have ever read. G k chesterton, you can't go wrong in reading any, any of his essays but a collection of his essays in particular that's entitled 'in defence of sanity' I'm raised catholic so when you give me one, i'll take three, and that would be the trinity.
