Even doing a good job became politicized in its own way. Scientists found themselves taking on another job in the gig economy. They had to become lobbyists. That absolutely sucked. If you had no strong political affiliation, but you were researching the wrong questions, then you might get blackballed from publishing legitimate scientific work. Being a scientist is a lot like being an investigative journalist in that respect.
