I'm helping a colleague of mine develop an area on the coastline of Peru. They only get rainfall like five, six days a year and there are no living things there. So I came up with this idea where you pump water from the sea uphill. And then you can irrigate it out to parts that we are going to convert into arable land. There is lots of desert reclamation technology that the Israelis have developed. But before all that happens, we need water but evaporation is a problem.

This conversation builds off of his two previous episodes on The Great Simplification, unpacking the ideas and tools that will be helpful in planning for an unknown future with more energy and material constraints. Dr. Simon Michaux is an Associate Professor of Geometallurgy at the Geological Survey of Finland. He has a PhD in mining engineering. Dr. Michaux’s long-term work is on societal transformation toward a circular economy.
