Percy was a sneaky, potted-eating surrender monkey who had taken the Stanley Road to position. He'd held back Richard's most loyal and trustworthy northerners until it was too late. Now interestingly this cost him £1,700 every year in payments to those knights and allies. And this was a stonking 42% of his income - which is a fascinating insight into what all this empire building and livery and maintenance stuff cost in days medieval. As it happens it all turned out to be money, surprisingly poorly spent.
