There was a bounty on native heads for $5 a scalp in California in the 1800s. So he was saying that we were strange and dirty and half happy after we were on the run for about a couple of decades from people hunting us. You know, as crazy as this sounds, I don't judge him. He was sadly a product of the currents of the time where they were all being indoctrinated in this notion of European supremacy.
