Hogwarts - The Sorting System

The students and faculty at hogworts maintaind this system because they all subscribe to a certain foundation, myth or origin story. Like in plato's republic, so too in the wizarding world of harry potter. The implication is that this sorting system isn't just an accident of the school's founding, but that it offers certain benefits to the community. What might these be? Maybe when students of a similar feather are allowed to flock together, they are better able to bond with their classmates and form meaningful relationships.
