Freud's Concept of Object Antithesis

Object antithesis belongs to a broader idea of object identification. Freud suggests that young boys will associate with their fathers, whereas girls identify with their mothers and then they come to assume those roles later in life. Young boys seek to pursue their mother's love as an object of gratification, whereas the father is what's getting in the way. And so you're caught and you can't actually develop. So object antithesis can pose a problem in that way if it is taken too far.
