Theodore Roosevelt, Surtu McKinley, and the American Dream
Surtu McKinley was a fascinating and complex character. Both of them had different views of how the races fit together, if you will. Taft comes out of a Republican party establishment. He's not a New England, sort of more progressive racial justice kind of thinker. His thinking is that coming out of slavery, he cites lots of statistics. African Americans have now proven their capacity for self-government by 1900. And so TAF's kind of Anglo-Saxon vision was one of helping uplift those folks.
