The book is about eight different historical sites, nine if you include the prologue at new orleans. I wanted to capture places that represented the different parts of the spectrum of how slavery is remembered and misremembered. And ultimately, i tried to find places that represented some of the themes that i might find in other locations. But also, just logistically, i didn't want the book to be a sort of overwhelming, physical artifact.
