Michael Hoffman: Albert Pike was a kind of non-pagan shaman. He wasn't religious, he had a respect for Christianity, but he wasn't a believer. And so when you begin to hear Shelby's account of what's going on here and you've read things like Albert Pike's account of the blazing star, you really begin to realize how did he figure all this out? It's never been clear to me.
