The Importance of Memory
The book is notoriously hard to categorize, you know, is this fiction or nonfiction. It deliberately problematizes the idea of memory, history as memory and history as construction for a novel. A huge amount of what we know comes from the memories of people who are fallible and memory is just inherently unreliable. Whatever you think of Vladik one way or another, his memory problems are the sort of things that happened to everybody.
