The only thing the reader is promising the author is to keep on reading. But there are a whole tone of other things that go into that keeping on reading question. And this is unlike most of what we want to talk about, because one of the best ways of examining this is looking at ways where it goes oran goes strangely. There are also examples where the author breaks the expected author reader contract intentionally and cleverly in a way that is satisfying.
