The Importance of Steps in Complexity

In assembly theory, you have the concept of steps as at least a rough index on complexity. The larger the number of steps and molecule has, the more improbable it is that it will be formed by chance in just a random mess. In fact, kind of assembly theory was invented as a process of measuring this decomposition and then rebuilding it. And I think as a theorist, that gives it much more ample playground for actually developing concepts that are physically relevant.
