According to Kierkegaard, the highest state of human existence was the religious existence. In another of his works, Fear and Trembling, he really got stuck into Danish Christendom. He thought that making Christianity something cultural actually destroyed Christianity. The North American version of it would be like a God in country kind of conflation.
