Israel doesn't have a written constitution. The Supreme Court has at times intervened both against government policy and against legislation, saying that this is not constitutional. Since the powers of the Supreme Court are not well-defined by law, this has created a lot of resentment from the government. And also from religious circles who claim that the court is somehow interfering in matters of personal belief.
