The Spanish Crown and Indigenous Peoples

Indigenous people writ large were considered vassals of the Spanish crown. In order to legitimize their power in the Americas, it's essential that the Spanish crown evangelize these people and recognize them as fully human. The interesting thing is that while maybe a million indigenous people are enslaved in just the first hundred years after the Spanish invasion, the Spanish crown actually go quite great lengths to try and ban indigenous enslavement.
