crucifixion was a popular form of punishment for people who had done wrong. Usually reserved for the worst and lowest, if i can put it that way or the enemy. It would not be carried out normally on anybody who was, for example, a roman citizen. But there are hints in our sources that originally it was more a form of punishment that didn't necessarily result in death.
