Red Valkyries

The title, Red Valkyries, is a play on the word "Valkyrie" and refers to immortal figures from old Norse myths. They are often represented as warrior women on winged steeds and with large swords. In early 20th century, when you first have this sort of Bolshevik championing of women's liberation women's emancipation, women who were associated with these movements for women's rights were often called 'Valkyries' So it could be seen as an insult. But in our contemporary political moment, I think because of just, you know, the popularity of Norse myths more generally, it's become a much more positive thing for a very kind of powerful, somewhat supernatural woman
