The Importance of Abdication in the Roman Empire

Napoleon issued an ultimatum to the austrians. Francis the second must abdicate by august tenth, or france would renounce treaty of presburg and resume hostilities. If they complied with napoleon's wishes, interim authority would fall to rulers of bavaria and saxony - allies of Napoleon. But it would involve doing the unthinkable: The austrians could dissolve the institution altogether.
