John Lee Hooker was born in this very week back in 1917. Pompeii's eruption of Vesuvius obliterated the entire population on August 24, 79 AD. In 1572 thousands were slaughtered in what became known as the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre. But such facts are mere nods to history compared to other acts of memorialisation.
