The Importance of Symbolic Reasoning in Machine Learning

The representational capacity outstrips the ability of a machine learning model to fully represent for many problem domains. And so that's one reason why I think you need something a little bit more like human reasoning that we've developed. But another reason is that there are these safety properties, these constraints that we'd like to impose over all the solutions that a model might give you. These come up in practical ways, like sometimes in strange scenarios, your self-driving car abruptly turns right or something like this.
