A lot of people have that assumption by default that if you're dating or married to somebody from a given language background that that's automatic. Most of the time it's probably the case where their English is going to be better than your Japanese for most people. Chances are because many people from all different places in the world can speak English to various degrees. There's a high chance that your foreign language is not going to be as strong as their English.
