Euripides's Romantic Tragedies
Euripides began to write tragedies for a people whose lives were now steeped in actual tragedy. Thousands of citizens had lost loved ones in Sicily, and the entire city was still in a state of trauma from that disaster. The sea dominated Euripides's other two romantic tragedies, Helen and Iphigenia among the Tarians – both as a setting and a force of nature. In these plays, his protagonists face dangers at sea, but their trials conclude with daring and joyful rescues.
