Is There a Light Pollution Issue in Astronomy?
Light pollution is going to have a big effect on this. But how big is that effect? You know, how much does it get in the way with observational astronomy? When we're talking about professional astronomy, a lot of the observations are done from specifically chosen dark sky sites. There are multiple plans in place for these so-called mega constellations where there are thousands and thousands of satellites just for one specific purpose. Yes, the expectation is that the number of satellites going up into orbit is going to skyrocket over the course of the next few decades.
