Judith Sargent Murray was one of North America's first feminists. She advocated for women to have the same rights as affluent white men, especially when it came to things like education. Her family benefited from slavery for a lot of her life and she did not say much about that in surviving correspondence or work. In 1812, Judith faced another potential scandal after her daughter Julia eloped with Adam Lewis Binghaman.
