There's a practical argument there that sort of pushing and pulling the outcomes doesn't actually help the students. So if you're in favor of affirmative action for people who have had a more deprived background or have had a less good education, they too would arrive at the college without the necessary preparation. You cannot lower the bar dramatically for kids from disadvantaged backgrounds, just as you cannot lower thebar for kids from ethnic or racial backgrounds.
