In 1965, the death penalty was abolished in England, Scotland and Wales. Only certain crimes, including treason, remained punishable by death until 1998. Ruth's 18-year-old sister died a few weeks after her execution. Her son Andy tragically died of suicide in 1982. Georgina Ellis was adopted after her mother's death.
