There have been a number of ways that people have tried to renegotiate what's going on here because it sounds an awful lot like the thing that God said didn't really happen. The serpent says two things and we'll get to that in a moment. But there's a pretty good case to make that both of the things the serpent said were true over and against the thing thatGod said not being true. It does raise some interesting questions on what the authors are trying to do with the text.
