CHAPTER

How to Remind a Patient of Adaptive Interactions

Sometimes a patient, depending on kind of how things are being organized in their brain might have a lot of cognitive distortions. And so one strategy that we can use to kind of insert a little bit of healing into the interview process itself is to when we say something back to the patient, we are looking for the adaptive trait. So maybe maladaptive interactions or traits and if you feel like you have enough rapport built up and you are in a situation where you can gently sort of redirect those. It can be a good time to get a patient thinking about that and identifying those traits and kind of moving forwardHopefully with a slightly different perspective that may be more effective in their future interactions.
