The First Soviet in Russian Revolutionary History
ivanovna was home to about 80 thousand people and a major centre of textile production. A strike began in the midst of the may day strikes that we talked about last week. Within short order, 32 thousand workers had walked off the job,. Every factory in the city shut down leading to the whole labor force being on strike. Their initial demands were basic work place things: an eight hour day, a minimum wage, nurseries for their kids - but they went further than any other Russian labour movement so far. The ivanova workers council gets to go down as the first soviet in russian revolutionary history.
